Marine & Deerfield has Relocated!

Suzanne WarfieldComment

Happy New Year to everyone!

I am finally settled into my new studio in Richmond Viriginia. It’s still out of my home, but my studio is now 3 times the size of my little one in Brooklyn. It’s cozy, and spacious at the same time. I have enough room to even have my Yoga matt and do my practice daily. And it’s the perfect space to do those one-on-one classes.

The past few years has been fun teaching/instructing students and other Milliners on how to use the Straw Braid Machine. I hope to continue to do it! I know New York City is a big draw for people, but let me tell you about how cool Richmond is, if you didn’t know.

It’s like a mini Brooklyn. Food and shopping is walkable from where I live. And yet, I can also jump into my car and go 5-15 minutes to the bustling area of Carrytown, downtown Shokebottom, West Side shops, the River and more… and with absolutley NO traffic. Richmond is full of great food, new restaurants, music scene and venues, art shows and museums and the cool Scotts Edition breweries.

I used to live here in the 80s and it’s very different. It’s grown a lot, cleaner, and safer. Yeah, it still has some grit, but I love that. And it’s a college town, so it has that young vibe. And the people? They are super nice. So refreshing.

Don’t get me wrong. I still love my New York. And I’ll be working from the most eastern part of New York each summer. Making plenty of trips to the City in between.

So if you do decide to come visit Richmond, let me know. And if you have been wanting to do a one on one how to make a hat, or learn the braid machine there are plenty of Air B&Bs and hotels, and so much to do.

Make that old hat Bright again.

I have a special offer for all my existing clients. If you mail me any hat I made for you, I will refresh it at no charge, except the return shipping ($30.00). Yeah shipping is steep these days.

If you have a hat, I didn’t make, I can also refresh it for you for $20.00 plus shipping. Just reach out to me and let me know what you need.

Oh, and so excited to share this! I also have my Audio booth up and ready. I’ll be in it soon to record the AUDIOBOOK version of POCKET OF PAIN. (see photos)

I hope everyone is doing well. These are rocky times for sure, in more ways that one. I won’t be sharing my personal problems, because frankly, anything that I have going on, seems like nothing compared to the global picture. Lets hope 2024 - an 8 year of Prosperity - opens doors to new ideas, new patterns, and much much prosperity for you and your loved ones.

Wishing you all the best and hope to see you soon!

END OF SUMMER NEWS

Suzanne WarfieldComment

Happy End of Summer Readers!

It’s hard to believe the end of summer is upon us. I’ll be honest. I’m happy. Selfishly so. It means I’m getting closer to my upcoming move. No, not on Labor Day weekend as previously reported. The move has been pushed till mid October. But the end of Summer brings on the anticipaton of this upcoming move, and my new studio. It also brings me to my next announcement:

Yes, you heard it! East Village Hats is hosting a Post Book Launch Party for me for my new book POCKET OF PAIN - A Memoir. Books will be available to buy direct from me, and you can get it signed. I will also be doing a short book reading. If you’ve already purchased a book, bring it along, I’ll sign it!

Oh, and did I mention, you can also try on hats, and buy your dream hat. East Village Hats are next level! There might even be a few of mine available.

Hope to see you there!

Marine & Deerfield is moving to Richmond Virginia!

Suzanne WarfieldComment

Unfortunately, I will not be able to take any orders until mid-end of September. If you have a project or are interested in something, feel free to email me, as I’m still available to make plans, but just not make hats. I will be in a bigger and better space, with more ideas flowing.

There is a HUGE change ahead in my life, and that change is location. Nothing else changes, my writings, my work, etc... But I am moving from New York where I've lived for the last 30 years (except that 3-year stint in Hamburg Germany) and headed to Richmond, Virginia. A place I lived in for 3 and half years in my early 20's. I never thought I'd go back. But over the past few years, every time we visited, it just grew on us more and more.

It's a small city (not town, not country), packed full of fun things. There are two universities, one in the middle and one in the outskirts. There is a fun community of life centered around arts, music, food, and entertainment. To us, it's like a mini Brooklyn. But without the crowds, trash, traffic, and hostility. Don't get me wrong, I love Brooklyn. I love all that I don't like about it too. It makes it special. But I'm just ready for change. Plus it's close to family and friends that I want closer to me.

So I'm sorting and packing up, and at the end of this month, everything gets shipped (trucked) out. Then I'll be staying out east in Amagansett till September. All the planning stays in good standing, we'll move to Richmond over or around Labor Day. After that, I'll be back and forth, with my main residence in Richmond, and part-time in Amagansett. But I’ll have full-time large studio where I can make lots of delicious hats.

So that's me. How about you?

How are you?

What's going on in your life?

Marine & Deerfield on Madonna

Madonna wearing Black Panama Hat with Polka-dots by Marine & Deerfield

It came as a beautiful surprise to me to find out that Madonna’s Stylist had chosen some hats from East Village Hats where my hats are on sale. I didn’t know about it at the time, but some time later, Julia Knox, milliner and owner of East Village Hats, told me my hat was chosen by Madonna to keep and to wear on an upcoming magazine spread.

As the Days unfolded from that little bit of information, which on it’s own was amazing, I found out through other sources and being tagged, that indeed, Madonna was wearing my hat (her hat), in an interview in Rolling Stones Magazine, and was featured on the Cover of the Magazine.

Then yesterday I found out that the footage from the shoot was being used for her new Music Video (see below).

Since the beginning of her career Madonna has had a huge impact on the world through her music, attitude, clothing and lifestyle. She is probably one of the most influential female artists ever. Her legacy goes beyond music, because her success and contributions helped pave the way for other female artists. Her bold music videos and world tours changed the music scene for women. So many artists “borrowed” from her creations. Camille Paglia called her a “major historical figure”.

I guess I’m drawn to her because of her polarizing character. She pushes buttons. She takes no crap. She does what she wants. She doesn’t care what you think. At least she doesn’t show it. Women are damned and criticized for their strengths and power. This is a time for women to celebrate our unique voices no matter how different, or how much it pushes our buttons.

All of these reasons and more, are why this is such an honor.

ps… only the hat with the polka-dots is a Marine & Deerfield.

INTERVIEW WITH SUZANNE WARFIELD - THE MAKING OF A HATTER

Suzanne WarfieldComment

I had the pleasure of being interviewed this past December, by Glen Graham, the creator of the 95Killers Podcast. The podcast explores the journey and process inside the minds of some very talented people who have “killed” their day jobs to pursue their passions.   I myself, an artist who always struggled to find my place in that world, found myself working 9-5 jobs just to make ends meet, getting farther and farther away from my dreams.  Here, in this interview, you can get a pretty big taste of how I ended up where I am today.

I want to thank everyone who journeyed to Brooklyn for the Marine & Deerfield Trunk Show at 1 of a Find Vintage.  It was a busy sunny Sunday with lots of families out celebrating Mother's Day and stopping in for a look.  I know how hard it was for many of you that had other obligations on Mother's Day, and long commutes on city transit.  There will be more opportunities, and events at different locations, so keep a look out.

For those of you who did miss out, you still have a chance to go see and purchase a Marine & Deerfield handmade hat at 1 of a Find Vintage, as they will remain  at the store for the next two weeks.

A huge thank you to Honey Moon of 1 of a Find Vintage, who curated a beautiful collection of Vintage frocks with the Marine & Deerfield hats.

Here's hoping the sun stays with us, so we can keep our hats on!

Some of my guests with Hattitude: Hannah Mason, Gwen, Daniela Jung, Nico, Jennifer Ballard and Rikke Brogaard.

My Talented husband, Mark Warfield, just finished shooting and editing a film for Marine & Deerfield. Check it out. He's so talented, generous and makes me feel like a star!

The last couple of days has been really fun.  Usually I'm on my own in my workshop working away.  I listen to music, audio tapes, sometime even have an old movie playing on my iPad.  It's good. But the downside is that I talk too fast and too much when I run into friends.  But the last few days I've felt like a star.  Having a mini documentary focused on my work, is really thrilling.  I love what I do, and I'm excited to share with you a little bit of my day.

DONT FORGET!!!  This Mother's Day, May 8th, 2016
MY Spring Trunk Show at 1 of a Find Vintage, in Prospect Heights. It's from 11am-7pm.  We'll be serving Prosecco, and matching Marine & Deerfield Hats with Vintage frocks from the shop.

Hope to see some of you there!

The Launch of Marine & Deerfield - December 15th, 2015

EventsSuzanne WarfieldComment

I can't believe it's taken me three months to post information about the event I held at my home back in December. Co-hosted by Tina Lipman and Victoria Sullivan, we celebrated the launch of Marine & Deerfield.Let's just say it's been a busy few months sense then.

A fabulous group of Ladies at the Launch modeling M&D hats.

It was a really fantastic night, with ladies trying on hats, and going home with one of their own.  I'm about to do another event, which I'll post details to soon.  This time a Trunk Show, at a local boutique.

The Milliner's Travels to Firenze - April 2015

Suzanne WarfieldComment

It's hard to believe it's been a year, but it's true.   A year ago I still lived in Hamburg Germany.   A year ago I embarked on one of the most memorable trips with my colleague and Mentor to Firenze, Italy.  Otherwise known as Florence.  A year ago, I completed my apprenticeship with Ulla.

Ulla and Lea enjoy a delicious Gelate on the The Ponte Vecchio

Ulla and Lea enjoy a delicious Gelate on the The Ponte Vecchio

I am sad to have left these ladies. And just as sad to end that apprenticeship.  I still feel like I have so much to learn. But it really was time. Time to come home, time to get my own business started, time to experiment!  But I will always look back on that time with such fond memories.  I will miss the camaraderie of working in an environment with others, and discussing projects, and helping each other grow.

But this was a business trip.  We might have been able to enjoy it in a remarkable place, but we hoofed it all day visiting Milliner suppliers and then followed it by some good old fashioned tourism.  Every evening we ate amazing Italian and delicious glasses of red wine.

Our trip started from Hamburg aboard Easy Jet ($55 one way!!), and then we took the train from Pisa to Florence.  We stayed just over the The Ponte Vecchio, a Medieval stone arch bridge that crosses over the Arno River.  It's beautiful, and lovely to see day or night.  At night the lights glitter from the shops built along it.

Every morning, we were up and out, on our way to visit a select amount of Milliner suppliers, from a huge haberdashery warehouse outside of Florence fitted with everything from feathers to pins, to an exquisitely old operation run by a very prestigious Italian family, in the heart of Florence.  We were met by an older gentlemen who didn't smile until the end of our meeting. That's where I picked up the nicest straws.  But the treat was visiting Gennaro Gori outside of Florence (see pics below).

Traveling to Gennaro Gori's supply house outside Florence was something out of a Milliner's fantasy.   Rows and rows of ribbons, felt capelines, hoods, straw capelines, feathers...  Well, you can see a little bit of what I saw in the pictures below. But they don't quite capture it completely.  The main warehouse was about, but not limited to, 5 giant rooms filled.  Some rooms had shelves that when right to the ceiling.   And down the drive you could see another warehouse, which had been damaged in a storm, and it still had boxes of supplies tucked inside.

But of course, what's work with out play, more gelato, lot's of food, achey sore feet from exploration?

So that's it till next time.  I definitely plan to join Ulla on her next adventure to Florence if she'll have me.  It was beyond fun, and informative.

Ciao for now, Firenze!

London Studies: Lessons in Sinamay and Parasisal

Making HatsSuzanne WarfieldComment

As I continue to go through my archives of photos from my life abroad, I'm discovering some great shots of some early projects.   The photos below are from my studies with Chlöe Scrivener.  We worked on two very grand hats. This one is the Sinamay project.  Created in Three separate pieces, two for the crown and one for the brim, using 3 layers of Sinamay. To get the material over the crown, the top is separate and seemed to the sides.  The end result is a clean, smooth finish.

With our second project, we worked with Parasisal.  In this lesson, I learned how to extend the crown using Buckram which later on will be covered by fabric.

Blast from the Past: London Lessons at UAL

My first bit of Millinery lessons took place at the London College of Fashion in Shoreditch, where they offer up Millinery courses.  I spent two weeks there my first time for an intensive course.   It was an amazing experience and helped turn me in the right direction.
